Former aides to President Obama, who host the “Pod Save America” podcast, sparked criticism after joking about the potential demise of President Donald Trump due to health issues.
The discussion began with host and ex-Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau reading a question from a listener. The question asked if there was anyone who could stop Trump. Favreau highlighted that this was reflective of the tone of questions they often receive.
Tommy Vietor, another co-host and former Obama aide, responded with a quip about Trump’s potential demise, referencing Iran and health issues. He suggested that ‘Father Time’ would eventually impact Trump. Vietor further jested about heart disease as a possibility.
Jon Lovett, another host, noted the inevitability of aging affecting everyone. He had previously written speeches for Obama and Hillary Clinton. Favreau remarked on nearing 2027, implying that concerns about Trump’s presidency might soon become irrelevant.
Dan Pfeiffer, a former Obama communications director and co-host, joked about the possibility of the podcasters seeking real jobs in the future.
The comments received backlash. Theo Wold, a former White House deputy assistant under Trump, criticized the lack of shared societal standards. He noted that publicly speculating on a president’s death was once considered inappropriate.
Morgan Murphy, a former Pentagon press secretary, condemned the group’s behavior. He highlighted how these comments reflect a shift in the political tone on the left.
Some view the remarks as troubling, given past attempts on Trump’s life. Nonetheless, the comments were criticized for their insensitivity. Murphy pointed out that historical leaders like Lincoln promoted reconciliation, but the podcast hosts failed to demonstrate this attitude even on a platform as casual as a podcast.
