Former Prosecutor Sues Justice Department Over Alleged Political Dismissal

26 minutes ago 0

An ex-federal prosecutor from the Eastern District of Michigan, Sunita Doddamani, has initiated legal proceedings against the U.S. Justice Department. She claims her dismissal was politically driven, linked to her work on cases involving anti-abortion activists.

Doddamani’s lawsuit alleges that her termination on April 13 was without prior notice, due process, or justification. She asserts her firing was a retaliatory action, infringing upon the Civil Service Reform Act, Administrative Procedure Act, and the First and Fifth Amendments.

The lawsuit highlights her involvement in prosecuting eight anti-abortion activists under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act). This legislation aims to prevent interference with reproductive health services, including abortions.

This case is part of a series of lawsuits by former Justice Department employees who claim political motivations led to their job losses. Doddamani argues that the department has used unjust terminations to serve political agendas.

The complaint outlines various personal and professional damages Doddamani has endured due to her dismissal. She is seeking reinstatement, backpay, and other compensation. It names several defendants, including Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The Justice Department has not provided further comments beyond referencing an April social media post about firing personnel for alleged FACE Act misuse.

The FACE Act, enacted in the early 1990s, addresses threats to abortion clinics and healthcare providers. While supporters advocate for its necessity, critics argue it infringes on abortion opponents’ free speech.

Under President Trump, the enforcement of FACE Act violations was limited to severe cases. Trump also pardoned individuals convicted under this statute, showcasing the political landscape surrounding its application.
