Young Progressive Wins Providence Democratic Mayoral Primary

Rhode Island State Representative David Morales, a 27-year-old democratic socialist supported by Senator Bernie Sanders, defeated Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in the Democratic primary, ending Smiley’s single term as mayor.

Morales, who could become the youngest mayor in Providence’s history if he wins the general election, celebrated his victory by highlighting the campaign’s success against significant challenges.

“Few believed that a 27-year-old democratic socialist could take on big money, corporate interests, and attack ads. We took them on and we won,” Morales declared in his victory speech.

Morales won the primary by a margin of 54% to 46% against Smiley, who was criticized for his management of the Brown University shooting last December.

Looking ahead to the general election, Morales faces Dave Talan, a 77-year-old Republican. In a city dominated by Democratic voters, Morales remains the favorite. Providence has a history of strong Democratic wins, including Vice President Kamala Harris’s previous victory over Donald Trump by a wide margin.

“The voters of Providence made their choice, and they chose David Morales,” Smiley expressed in his concession speech.

Morales’s campaign, backed by various local leaders and unions, focused on progressive goals such as capping rent increases, expanding affordable housing, and raising taxes on polluters and corporate landlords.

He emphasized his vision of a city government that prioritizes the needs of working residents.

“A simple vision that our neighbors deserve a mayor who will fight for them,” he stated.

The primary reflects broader conflicts between progressives and established incumbents within the Democratic Party. Morales appealed to voter frustrations over rising housing costs.

In contrast, Smiley relied on his experience, arguing it made him more suitable for leadership.

The rent stabilization issue became a focal point; the city council’s proposal to limit rent hikes was vetoed by Smiley and lacked sufficient support to override.

Morales also addressed his stance on immigration, advocating for Providence as a sanctuary city.

“The city must use every tool at our disposal to defend our immigrant community,” Morales said.
