New York City investigators and Manhattan prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation to determine the cause behind the structural failure of a Midtown building. The inquiry is led by the New York City Department of Investigation and the Manhattan district attorney’s office. As of Friday, the investigation was in its early stages, with both its focus and specific targets remaining unclear. This is partly because workers are still in the process of stabilizing the 37-story high-rise.
The building at 235 East 42nd Street was undergoing a conversion from office space to residential apartments when workers identified concerning structural issues. On Tuesday, cracks in concrete floors and bent columns on the 21st floor prompted evacuations and an urgent emergency response.
The criminal investigation is expected to be challenging and may demand significant time and effort. The site, previously the headquarters of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, was on track to become the largest residential conversion project in the country. Such extensive endeavors typically involve numerous companies, including subcontractors and developers, each with specific responsibilities.
Determining the cause of the problem, assessing who might be criminally accountable, and understanding the incident’s full scope could take several months or even years. There is also the possibility that the investigation may conclude without any criminal charges being filed.
