At least 76 people lost their lives when a passenger ferry caught fire in the Philippines, authorities confirmed on Saturday. This tragedy ranks as one of the most lethal maritime incidents globally in 2023. The incident follows earlier ferry disasters this year in Zimbabwe and Guyana, with the Zimbabwe disaster on Lake Kariba claiming at least 94 lives and the MV Barima sinking off Guyana, leaving around 100 dead.
The MV June Aster had 132 people aboard when it ignited on Wednesday night during a 20-hour journey from Manila to Coron in Palawan province. The vessel was 24 miles from its destination when flames erupted. Survivors reported hearing an explosion before the vessel rapidly became engulfed. Officials have not yet identified the cause of the fire; an investigation is underway.
Philippine authorities are retrieving remains from the burned ferry and using forensics to identify victims. An official press conference on Saturday highlighted the priority of victim identification and fire cause investigation, as stated by Philippine Coast Guard official Geronimo Tuvilla.
Of the passengers, 43 survived. The ferry captain is reportedly alive, though not listed among the survivors. With over 7,600 islands, ferry travel is essential in the Philippines, connecting many sea-accessible communities.
Zimbabwe Ferry Capsized: In August, a government ferry capsized on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, killing at least 94. Survivor Chance Siyamavhu, 45, recounted how many passengers failed to use life jackets. The vessel, exceeding its 90-passenger capacity, overturned amid strong waves.
Guyana Ferry Capsized: The MV Barima, an 87-year-old ferry, capsized off Guyana in July with about 179 aboard, resulting in approximately 100 deaths. Questions emerged about the passenger manifest and crew actions leading up to the sinking. Survivor Helena Moonsammy lost four grandchildren, recalling her desperate struggle to survive in the water for nine hours.
Indonesian Ferry Fire: In August, at least five perished in a ferry fire off Indonesia, with many reported missing. The Mutiara Sentosa 2 fire resulted in a major rescue, saving about 230 passengers en route from Surabaya to Makassar.
Cyprus Ferry Capsized: Late August saw at least eight fatalities and 20 missing when a Cyprus ferry flipped shortly after departing Kyrenia for Turkey. Rescue operations followed, but many, including children, remained unaccounted for. Witness accounts reveal panic and failed attempts to rescue passengers from the sea.
