On Wednesday, Texas law enforcement disclosed they had acquired “credible information” regarding a possible violent threat targeting the state’s capitol in Austin. This development resulted in the arrest of a suspect.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) informed Newsweek they received the tip-off on Tuesday night about the plan. Consequently, Benny Caldera Jr., aged 40, was apprehended at his residence in Converse early Wednesday morning.
DPS reported that Caldera faces charges of making a felony terroristic threat against a public servant. He is currently detained in the Bexar County Jail.
“DPS leadership notified Texas State Legislators of the threat and arrest earlier today, and the Texas Capitol remains open for regular operating hours,” stated the department. “DPS will continue to maintain heightened security at the Texas Capitol to safeguard all employees, visitors, and state officials.”
“As this is an ongoing investigation, there is no further information available at this time,” they added.
The specific target of the alleged attack remains unclear. Texas DPS collaborated with the FBI and local partners during the inquiry. The FBI directed all inquiries to the DPS.
Governor Greg Abbott commented on the situation via X on Wednesday evening, stating, “Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol. Thank you, [Texas DPS], for a job well done.”
This situation is unfolding as a breaking news story. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
