Recently released body camera video shows a tense encounter between a carjacking suspect and Maryland police. The footage captures the suspect driving toward officers, hitting an officer and several vehicles before gunfire erupts as she tries to escape.
Anne Arundel County Police responded on May 7 at approximately 9 p.m. They went to North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie after hearing a hit-and-run report. Upon arrival, they learned a woman had crashed into a vehicle. She then forcibly took a car from a family member who came to assist her.
The suspect, 28-year-old Jasmin L. Cooper, was found in the vehicle on the 8500 block of Severn. In the video, officers are seen pointing guns at the woman, instructing her to turn off the car and exit. Though she raises her hands at one point, she remains inside.
Just moments later, Cooper drives away aggressively from the parking lot. Officers scramble to avoid being hit as she speeds off.
Authorities report that Cooper drove toward the officers, hitting one officer, two patrol cars, and another vehicle. This led officers to fire their weapons, hitting her.
Other officers arrived as Cooper turned onto Reece Road. She crashed into yet another car near Reece Road and Telegraph Road. She then attempted to break into another vehicle before being apprehended.
The footage shows Cooper on the ground in handcuffs. It also captures officers tending to her wound after she was shot in the parking lot.
Cooper faces charges including carjacking, attempted carjacking, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault.
Both the suspect and the officer involved were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
