USC fans converged for the Trojans’ home opener against San Jose State, with many deciding not to attend. The hot weather deterred spectators from visiting Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch the game. This contrasts with the fan base head coach Lincoln Riley has come to appreciate. Riley downplayed the low attendance, describing it as a ‘false narrative’, and anticipated strong support at USC games this season.
“I think that comes from a lot of people who don’t follow our program, most of those who have never stepped foot in the Coliseum,” Riley stated, according to the LA Times.
He emphasized, “During my years here, attendance has increased annually, as has our performance at the Coliseum, notably with a clean sweep last year. I expect it to happen again this year.”
The cheerleader holding a portable fan exemplified efforts to manage the intense heat before the match with San Jose State on August 29, 2026, in Los Angeles. Attendance improved significantly during the game against Louisiana-Lafayette at home, with fans turning up as the Trojans advanced to 3-0.
However, maintaining focus proved challenging. Fans were there to cheer for a win, but sometimes that isn’t the sole goal. Tensions arose, with fans resolving personal disagreements during the match. Even within a unified supporter base, conflicts occur. This happened when fans watched USC score 49 points. A noted altercation involved a fan wearing a backward bedazzled hat and sunglasses. He confronted another fan speaking to his companion, leading to a physical altercation.
Despite being on the receiving end of punches from two fellow fans, the situation escalated. One individual was pulled away, only to engage in another scuffle. The original fan continued to retaliate before climbing the stairs and vanishing.
Alcohol potentially contributed to the situation, according to observers. Although not flawless, USC fans ultimately gathered to support and uplift their team in what was expected to be a successful outing.
