On Sunday, Team USA women’s basketball demonstrated their dominance once again on the global stage. Led by standout performances from Breanna Stewart, Jackie Young, and Caitlin Clark, the team secured a gold medal victory over France with a score of 97-79. This win marks Team USA’s fifth consecutive gold medal in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and their seventh in the last eight tournaments.
Despite trailing in the first half, the U.S. team made a strong comeback. A 30-12 run in the third quarter was pivotal in solidifying their victory. Breanna Stewart was crucial in this effort, finishing with a double-double. She scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and maintained a 70% shooting accuracy. Her exceptional performance earned her the tournament’s MVP award.
Jackie Young contributed 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists. She was named the player of the game due to her impactful presence on the court, shooting 50% from the field. Caitlin Clark, coming off the bench, provided key moments that kept the momentum in favor of the U.S. She scored 12 points, including a crucial buzzer-beater, and made several important plays in the fourth quarter.
France put up a strong challenge, led by Dominique Malonga and Gabby Williams who scored 21 and 20 points respectively. Despite a promising start, France’s offense stalled in the third quarter, making only four field goals, which allowed the U.S. to take a commanding lead.
With this victory, the U.S. has now claimed a total of 12 gold medals across global tournaments. The team’s consistency continues to affirm their place at the top of international basketball. Emerging stars such as Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese are expected to maintain this legacy.
As the players celebrate their achievement, focus will soon return to domestic competition with the WNBA playoffs approaching.
