Cubs Face Challenges as Wind Impacts Game Against Pirates

3 weeks ago 0

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya watched as Pete Crow-Armstrong connected with the ball in the third inning. With a speed of 106.4 mph, it seemed destined to give the Cubs an early lead. However, the wind, blowing in at 10 mph, pushed the ball back 18 feet. It landed in Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz’s glove, leaving Amaya to return to first base.

Two innings later, Crow-Armstrong sent another powerful hit, this time at 103.2 mph. Again, Cruz caught it. These moments resulted in three potential runs lost, contributing to the Cubs’ 4-3 defeat to the Pirates. Their record now stands at 83-67, tying them with the Philadelphia Phillies for the top National League wild-card spot. The Cubs hold the tiebreaker after defeating the Phillies 6-1 in their season series.

“Some days the weather works in your favor, some days against you,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “It impacted our game today. As a hitter, you need good swings. Pete swung well, but the conditions were not in our favor.” With 12 games left in the season, and the postseason approaching, the Cubs are preparing for what lies ahead.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Daniel Palencia deals during the ninth inning of a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026.

The performance of Daniel Palencia was notable. The former closer had been struggling since returning from right-elbow inflammation. In seven appearances, he posted a 9.95 ERA. While in September, his fastball averaged 98.2 mph compared to 99.9 mph in May. His 6.1% whiff rate was also worrisome.

On Sunday, Palencia recorded five whiffs in his 18 pitches. His fastball touched 100 mph, striking out Bryan Reynolds to end the ninth inning. “I feel better now,” Palencia stated. “I’m trying to enjoy the game and stay healthy. When that happens, I perform well.”

The Cubs acknowledge the need for in-house bullpen improvement. With injuries impacting other pitchers, the current bullpen must deliver. For Palencia, it’s about gaining game experience, as Sunday marked his 28th appearance this year.

“Danny had his best outing since returning,” Counsell noted. “It’s encouraging, and we hope to build on it.” Palencia’s emotional display after striking out Reynolds was reminiscent of his playoff performances last year. “That’s me,” Palencia expressed. “I’m having fun and enjoying playing with a good team.”
