Miami Construction Rig Collapse Sends Four to Hospital

2 weeks ago 0

On Monday morning, a construction rig collapsed in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. The incident occurred near Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive, causing significant damage and sending four people to the hospital.

Miami Fire Rescue swiftly responded to the scene when the drilling rig toppled onto three vehicles and a construction container, trapping two workers and sparking a vehicle fire. Firefighters worked to rescue two trapped victims from a crushed container, ensuring their safe extraction.

Fire Chief Robert Hevia provided details during a news conference. He revealed that firefighters simultaneously doused a fire that began when the rig crushed a BMW. The driver managed to escape the burning vehicle, reversing and exiting as flames engulfed the car. The accident also damaged two parked, unoccupied vehicles.

“To be able to see the crane falling, pull the car in reverse and pop out of the back while the car’s on fire, really incredible,” Hevia said, emphasizing the BMW driver’s quick response.

The victims included two construction workers, ages 27 and 29, the 47-year-old rig operator, and the BMW driver. All were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Hevia confirmed that all 18 workers at the site were accounted for.

While firefighters focused on extinguishing the fire, the technical rescue team managed to cut through the Conex box to free the trapped workers successfully. Miami Police advised motorists to avoid the area due to road closures between SE 12th Street and SE 13th Street.

The cause of the rig collapse remains undetermined. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident to ascertain the factors involved. The collapse occurred at the site designated for Ken Griffin’s planned Citadel headquarters.

Miami Fire Rescue and Citadel have not provided immediate comments regarding the incident. For further inquiries, contact Sophia Compton, a writer at Fox News Digital.
