Céline Dion Shares Her Journey with Stiff-Person Syndrome

4 minutes ago 0

Céline Dion has opened up about her prolonged health struggle that was kept under wraps until recently. At age 58, the singer spoke about her experience with stiff-person syndrome in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar Global Icons issue. She revealed that symptoms plagued her for 17 years before her diagnosis in August 2022.

Understanding Stiff-Person Syndrome

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder. It causes severe muscle stiffness and painful, often unpredictable spasms. Dion shared that these symptoms were so debilitating at times that she struggled to walk and had to take high doses of Valium to manage daily activities.

“It is a progressive condition,” Dion noted, showing preference to avoid the term ‘disease’. She also grappled with guilt, attributing show cancellations to minor illnesses, while privately dealing with severe symptoms.

Public Revelation and Diagnosis

Dion learned of her condition after intense and unexplained symptoms emerged around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerns about fan perceptions led her to withdraw from public view. In December 2022, she publicly revealed her diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video. She explained that the spasms impacted every aspect of her life, including her ability to perform.

Following this revelation, Dion postponed several concerts and canceled all remaining dates for her Courage World Tour in 2023 and 2024. Her rehabilitation includes medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar.

Return to the Public Eye

As treatments progressed, Dion began appearing more publicly. February 2024 saw her on stage at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, where she presented the album of the year award to Taylor Swift. She continued to promote her documentary, “I Am: Céline Dion,” and made a red carpet appearance in June.

In a notable comeback moment, Dion performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, singing Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower. Her performance at Elie Saab’s 1001 Seasons fashion show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, followed in November 2024.

Looking Forward

This year, Dion announced a five-week residency in Paris, set to start the following month. In a heartfelt video, she shared, “This year, I’m getting the best birthday gift of my life. I’m feeling good, strong, and excited, though a little nervous. But most of all, I’m grateful to all of you!”

In preparation, her recovery includes 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet on other days. Reconnecting with fans is central to her return, and as she stated, “I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them.”
