In Kentucky, the love for bluegrass music and bourbon is undeniable. This week, however, discussions at the Kentucky Distillers’ Association meeting in Louisville focused on more serious concerns. President Trump’s tariff policies and his verbal clashes with Canada have brought frustration to the forefront.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who will soon turn 49, attended the meeting. He spoke to attendees about the need to roll back these tariffs. Beshear noted that before the tariffs, bourbon sales in Canada had dropped by 85%. He attributed this decline partly to the president’s remarks about Canadians.
Beshear is gaining attention as a possible contender in the 2028 presidential race. His new memoir, “Go and Do Likewise: How We Heal a Broken Country,” is set for release by St. Martin’s Press. The title draws inspiration from the Good Samaritan story in the Bible.
When asked if Democrats should engage more with faith communities, Beshear agreed. He highlighted the Biblical miracle of the fishes and loaves, showing parallels with policies aimed at ending hunger in America. Beshear criticized President Trump for attempting to reduce SNAP benefits during a government shutdown, describing the act as unchristian.
Beshear also made a case for Democrats to communicate more straightforwardly. He argued that terms like “food insecurity” lack emotional impact. Instead, he believes discussing issues like hunger can connect more effectively with people’s compassion.
President Trump has seen electoral success in Kentucky, a traditionally conservative state. However, Beshear pointed to his own achievements as a Democratic attorney general and governor as evidence that Democrats can win in the South. He mentioned that figures like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, both Southern Democratic governors, set examples of success.
Though some label him as a political insider due to his father’s tenure as governor, Beshear maintains his independent credentials. He recounted doing significant pro bono legal work for his father.
As the current chair of the Democratic Governors’ Association, Beshear plans to wait until the midterms to decide on a 2028 run. He is assessing his family’s thoughts on the matter while positioning himself against potential rivals like Vice President J.D. Vance. Beshear criticized Vance for using faith divisively.
Beshear appeared at Congressman Jim Clyburn’s fish fry in South Carolina, signaling his readiness for potential presidential ambitions. In his memoir, he discusses “The Great American Reset,” emphasizing the need for kindness and understanding in society.
“Go and Do Likewise” will be available in various formats including hardcover, eBook, and audio. Pre-orders are open through platforms such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org.
