The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art stands as a monumental project by George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise. Located in Los Angeles, this museum unapologetically resembles a spacecraft, reflecting its futuristic design. Architect Ma Yansong’s firm, MAD, is responsible for the unique biomorphic structure, co-founded by Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson.
The museum opens its doors to the public on Tuesday, featuring Lucas’s extensive and diverse personal collection of figurative art. Spanning a vast area of over 300,000 square feet, the project reportedly cost around $1 billion. This figure becomes plausible when considering the museum’s eccentric architecture and expansive collection.
Inside, visitors will find a bewildering array of artifacts. The collection includes ancient relics, Renaissance and baroque paintings, alongside a mix of reproductions and less traditional art forms. The museum challenges conventional categorizations and presents a mishmash of styles and periods, adding to its distinctiveness.
