Secretary of State Marco Rubio has shared insights into the ongoing Middle East conflict as President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly draws near. During his appearance on ‘Fox & Friends,’ Rubio discussed the challenging diplomatic environment with Iran’s leadership and previewed upcoming talks.
Addressing NATO’s involvement, Rubio expressed concerns about the alliance’s effectiveness. He noted that some member countries prevented the U.S. from utilizing military bases during the conflict with Iran. Rubio questioned the value of NATO if bases are unavailable during critical situations. He stated, “We had a couple countries say, ‘You can’t use your base here.’ Well, that’s absurd.”
He highlighted that access to bases in Europe is a significant strategic advantage for the U.S., enabling global force projection. Rubio, a consistent supporter of NATO, shared his disappointment, “If that’s going to be denied to us, then we’ve lost the biggest reason for us to be in NATO.” Although specific countries weren’t mentioned, reports indicated Italy and Spain restricted U.S. military access during the Iran conflict.
Despite setbacks, Rubio acknowledged that cooperation within NATO has improved recently. He noted, “I hope we’ve crossed a point where that resistance from NATO countries is no longer going to happen.” Rubio emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among NATO allies to address global challenges effectively.
