Senate Vote on Data Center Electricity Cost Legislation

9 hours ago 0

On Wednesday, the Senate held a vote on legislation aimed at reducing the electricity costs for data centers. The result was a close decision, with 57 senators voting in favor and 43 against the bill.

The legislation did not receive unanimous support. Among those opposed were 41 Democratic senators, in addition to two independents who align with Democrats, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine.

Support for the measure included 49 Republicans and eight Democrats. The Democrats who voted in favor included Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire, Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota, Jon Ossoff from Georgia, and Raphael Warnock from Georgia, among others. The overall debate reflects growing concerns in Washington about the rising electricity demands of large data centers and the financial burden on utilities and electricity consumers.

While the Senate roll-call record lists each senator’s vote, it does not provide the individual reasons for their positions.
