Lane Kiffin, the head coach of the LSU Tigers, faced questions regarding his strategic decisions during their Week 5 game against McNeese State. LSU decisively led the game, entering halftime with a 35-0 advantage. When officials offered the chance to shorten the second half with a continuously running clock, Kiffin decided against it.
In a post-game discussion, Kiffin clarified his position, stating, “You play the game, we decide when the game’s over by the way that we play. And how physical that we play.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a standard of play, regardless of whether players are in the first, second, or third team positions.
Despite LSU’s significant lead and a series of recent injuries, Kiffin saw the game as an opportunity to engage more players on the field. The starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, threw three touchdowns. Backup quarterbacks Landen Clark and Husan Longstreet combined for 25 passes. In this game, eight players made rushing attempts and ten had receptions, allowing a broader participation from the team.
Although LSU outpaced McNeese, both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter. LSU, however, closed off the game with a strong performance, blanking McNeese 14-0 in the final quarter.
The Tigers are now set to face Kentucky, a team with newfound confidence after a comeback victory against South Carolina. The matchup will test LSU’s ability to maintain their high standards of play under challenging SEC competition.
