On October 7, 2026, President Donald Trump hinted at potential surprises ahead of the midterm elections. During an event in Maryland, Trump alluded to forthcoming announcements with Russ Vought, the White House budget chief and key figure in Project 2025, though he did not offer specifics. He stated, “We have some big surprises coming up in a few weeks, right Russ? He’s gonna be one of the important people in the history of our country.”
This comment has led to conjecture about possible electoral implications. Jessica Tarlov, a Democratic strategist and Fox News host, expressed concern on X, suggesting, “Between this and his ‘midterm surprise,’ the time to prepare for him to try to steal an election is now.” Similarly, Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney, pondered, “Election interference in the offing.”
Others scrutinized Trump’s collaboration with Vought. Anthony Scaramucci, a former White House communications director, noted inconsistency with Trump’s 2024 campaign efforts to distance himself from Project 2025’s conservative goals. Scaramucci recalled, “Of course he said in July 2024 he had nothing to do with Project 2025 and he didn’t know Russ.”
Despite the speculation, neither Trump nor the White House clarified if these comments relate to the election. Instead, attention has shifted to Vought’s involvement in federal spending and government restructuring. Matt Klink, a Republican strategist, explained Trump’s comments as a method to motivate voters. “Trump’s remarks about a ‘Midterm Surprise’ are spin, and the spin is the point,” Klink remarked. “Trump tied the line to his Nebraska rally crowds and enthusiasm. That’s a turnout message, not a classified briefing.”
Newsweek has reached out to the White House, the Office of Management and Budget, and the America First Policy Institute for comments. The situation is unfolding and updates will follow.
