Israel Marks Third Anniversary of Hamas-Led Attack with Commemorations

2 hours ago 0

Three years after a Hamas-led attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, Israel commemorates the traumatic event and its impact on the region. Memorials have been held at numerous locations, including homes, roadsides, kibbutzim, and the Nova music festival site, where militants killed over 360 people and captured 44 hostages.

The attack prompted Israel’s war in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians and significant devastation. The conflict has spread beyond the Gaza Strip, affecting Lebanon and Syria, and leading to global criticism of Israel.

Today, about 80% of Gaza’s structures are damaged. Most of the over 2 million residents have been displaced, confined to less than half of the territory’s original area. Although a fragile ceasefire has held for nearly a year, Israeli strikes continue.

Solemn Memorials Amid Israeli Election

The commemorations occur alongside a contentious Israeli election. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leading Israel during the attacks, faces criticism from opponents who accuse him of neglecting warnings and rejecting calls for a public inquiry. Opponents claim he mismanaged pre-attack warnings and misdirected financial aid to Gaza. Netanyahu, however, blames military leaders for the attacks and positions himself as a strong defender against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.

A recent Israeli Democracy Institute poll found that 62% of Israelis consider the attacks a significant factor in their voting decisions.

Personal Stories of Trauma and Loss

Lucas Cunio, a survivor from kibbutz Nir Oz, continues to struggle with trauma. Nir Oz, near Gaza’s border, faced severe casualties with about a quarter of its 400 residents captured or killed. Cunio’s brothers were freed after two years in captivity, and he uses activities like surfing for healing. “When I go to sleep, sometimes I can see it. It’s really hard,” he said.

Hamas’ Stance and Impact

A Hamas military wing spokesman praised the attacks, noting the profound effects on the region. Acknowledgments were made regarding the severe toll on Gaza’s populace. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for Iran’s support and for other militant groups like Hezbollah.

Ongoing Violence in Gaza

In recent updates, four people have died in Gaza over the past day, with extra deaths from previous injuries. Israeli military operations in Gaza persist, resulting in ongoing fatalities.

Vigils and Antisemitic Incidents

In Tel Aviv, Israelis held moments of silence. Around the world, antisemitic attacks have risen significantly. In 2025, violent incidents rose by 97% in countries with large Jewish populations outside Israel. A tragic event in Sydney, Australia resulted in 15 deaths during a Hanukkah attack.

Grief and Remembrance

Rachel Goldberg-Polin, mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin killed after being taken hostage, discussed her ongoing grief. She highlighted her son’s ordinary yet cherished qualities, emphasizing the enduring pain of loss.

As Israel commemorates the three-year mark since the November music festival tragedy, visible displays such as hostage posters have been removed. However, the memories and impacts of the attacks endure for many.
