Controversy Surrounding Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Remarks on Israel

2 hours ago 0

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces criticism after his statements on the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. While acknowledging Hamas’ assault that resulted in over 1,100 Israeli deaths and more than 250 hostages, Mamdani focused his remarks on criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza over the past three years.

In his post on social media platform X, Mamdani stated, “The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians — including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed.”

He further highlighted that the suffering has worsened due to Israeli military actions, including bombings and drone strikes. Mamdani also pointed out that these actions affect aid shipments and civilians, expressing solidarity with grieving New Yorkers while criticizing the use of tax dollars for these incidents. Notably, he did not refer to New York City’s significant Jewish community.

Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman explicitly criticized Mamdani’s statement, calling it “reprehensible” and accusing the mayor of presenting disputed allegations that antagonize those he claims to support.

Despite Mamdani’s comments and Goldman’s reaction, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have not responded. However, both leaders released separate statements regarding the attack.

Schumer, acknowledging the attack as the “single deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust,” emphasized his commitment to Israel’s security and the welfare of both Israeli and Palestinian peoples. He advocated for peace through the establishment of two states.

Similarly, Jeffries acknowledged the ongoing struggles faced by the Jewish community while condemning civilian casualties in the Middle East. He called for a significant shift in U.S. policy and supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state to promote dignity and self-determination.
