Vice President JD Vance on Thursday cited Senator Bernie Sanders’ previous opposition to open borders. He used this to justify the Trump administration’s latest immigration measures and criticize self-identified socialists in the U.S. This unexpected alignment between the two contrasting politicians comes as the administration plans to bar several companies from a major employment-based immigration pathway. Additionally, there will be increased scrutiny on visa programs used by businesses and universities.
During a press conference about enforcement actions against companies accused of abusing employment visa programs, Vance stated that many current socialist politicians have moved away from historically focusing on worker protection. “In 2016, Bernie Sanders, then the leading socialist in America, was asked about open borders,” Vance said to Newsweek at the event. “He gave a response akin to Stephen Miller’s, stating open borders would displace American workers.”
Vance argued that the modern left has diverged from this stance, insisting that immigration policies must prioritize American workers over foreign labor.
Vance Justifies Immigration Crackdown by Citing Sanders
Vance’s remarks defend the Trump administration’s suspension of companies like Microsoft and Adobe from the Labor Department’s PERM program. This program helps employers sponsor foreign workers for permanent residency. He revealed an investigation indicating Microsoft laid off 6,000 American workers, yet employed roughly 6,300 non-citizens under H-1B visas. Officials claim some firms exploit immigration programs to replace domestic workers with cheaper foreign labor.
Vance noted Sanders’ prior concern about labor-market competition due to immigration. He claimed Sanders previously saw open borders as risking American wages and job opportunities. Vance contrasted Sanders’ earlier views with those of many current socialist candidates. “Socialism is a difficult term to define today,” Vance said. “Traditionally, socialism is about prioritizing workers.”
Sanders’ Stance on Border Security
Despite being a leading progressive figure, Sanders distinguishes between backing immigration reform and supporting open borders. In campaigns, Sanders argued for effective borders and immigration systems while pursuing broader reforms. He has consistently emphasized secure U.S. borders alongside advocating for legal status for millions of undocumented immigrants. Sanders supports using technology and personnel at the border but opposes extensive wall construction for enforcement.
