Glen Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, has chosen to steer clear of Hollywood’s political controversies. In an interview with Esquire, Powell explained his decision to avoid politics, attributing it to the divisive nature of political discourse.
Over time, I realized that politics divide people. For me, it’s the worst version of a conversation. I genuinely do not like the discourse. It’s not as healthy as it once was.
Powell acknowledged that he respects those who engage in political discussions and activism. However, he sees his calling in areas other than politics. During his upbringing, although his mother worked in the Reagan administration, politics were not a focal point at home.
Powell emphasized his desire to unite people through cinema, believing that films offer a universal language. He highlighted the escapism provided by action movies in a world increasingly divided by politics.
Movies are a conversation; politics always felt to me like two people trying to prove a point.
Powell’s journey in Hollywood was not instant. Despite facing early setbacks, including doubts from casting directors, he has become a prominent actor. His roles in films like Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters have cemented his reputation.
Powell expressed that persistence in the industry involves more than just talent, mentioning the importance of learning other skills, such as writing and producing, which he now utilizes in his career.
Aside from his professional life, Powell began a relationship with actress Michelle Randolph. Both share a fast-paced lifestyle and strong family values. Powell values the mutual support they provide each other in both their personal and professional endeavors.
