Johnnie “DJ” Jones, a freshman offensive lineman for the Missouri Tigers, is on the mend after a heart transplant operation. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz shared the positive news on Thursday, confirming Jones’ successful surgery and his ongoing recovery.
In a social media statement, Coach Drinkwitz expressed gratitude for the medical team that cared for Jones as well as the donor and their family. “We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible,” Drinkwitz stated.
Jones, who had shown no prior symptoms of heart issues, was found to have a hidden defect during a mandatory heart screening conducted in the summer. The discovery pushed the Missouri team’s medical staff to seek additional evaluation at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
The medical professionals at the Mayo Clinic identified a severe heart condition that necessitated a transplant. This followed two weeks of initial observation and unresolved tests. Coach Drinkwitz revealed that the coaching staff was informed last week about the necessity of the transplant for Jones.
Jones, an 18-year-old graduate from Venice High School on Florida’s Gulf Coast, had been recruited as a four-star player by Missouri. The Missouri Tigers currently hold a 4-1 record as they enter Week 6 of the college football season, hosting Columbia this Saturday.
