Mayor Mamdani Calls for Action

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has demanded President Donald Trump stop all ICE enforcement in the state after a federal agent shot an illegal immigrant in the Bronx. This incident has triggered protests and confrontations with law enforcement.

At a news conference on Thursday night, Mamdani criticized the shooting and mentioned he spoke with Trump for two hours. Mamdani urged the release of the injured man, which was not successful, and voiced the city’s desire for ICE agents to leave New York City, stating, “All they do is terrorize this city.”

Accusations Against ICE

Mamdani accused ICE of operating “with impunity,” creating “chaos and terror” nationwide. He claimed ICE has caused more deaths than it has prevented. “Today’s shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known,” he said, adding, “ICE is rotten to its core.” Mamdani confirmed the transfer of the shot man out of the hospital by ICE agents.

Governor Hochul’s Reaction

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also reached out to Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “Tonight, I spoke with President Trump and DHS Secretary Mullin about the shooting in Marble Hill,” she announced on social media. She expressed her outrage on behalf of New Yorkers, urging a cessation of ICE operations in New York. Hochul requested the release of body camera footage to establish the facts.

ICE Operation Details

DHS revealed the background of the operation, saying ICE was attempting to arrest a wanted individual from the Dominican Republic when an agent opened fire around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The injured man is alive, receiving treatment at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are leading the investigation.

DHS reported the man as an illegal immigrant with a criminal history, including grand larceny, assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession, claiming his connection to the Trinitarios gang.

Police Findings

Later that night, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the individual as 28 years old, his 5-year-old son present in the vehicle during the shooting. Tisch assured the boy was uninjured and is with a family member.

Evidence showed an ICE agent fired seven rounds, striking the driver near his neck. Tisch affirmed the ongoing care for the child.

Protest and Demonstrations

Numerous demonstrators gathered at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the man is treated. They chanted “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace” as protest tensions rose. Protesters clashed with police as they set up barricades, with some demonstrators throwing water bottles at officers.

Law enforcement made arrests during the protest. The Associated Press contributed to this coverage.
