The death of María del Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman, in the wake of her eviction has intensified the political crisis in Spain. The event has sparked nationwide protests over rising housing costs and contributed to the call for an early election.
Abascal, affectionately known as ‘Maricarmen,’ died on Wednesday following her hospitalization. Her removal from her Madrid home of seventy years brought her into the national spotlight. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had announced a snap election for November 29 after emergency housing measures failed to pass in Parliament. Her passing has heightened scrutiny on Sánchez’s Socialist Party amid widespread frustration over escalating rents and housing affordability.
Abascal’s eviction on September 23 garnered considerable attention. Images showed her being carried from her apartment on a stretcher as police cordoned off the street, preventing demonstrators from halting the eviction. These scenes led to demonstrations in Madrid and other cities, making Abascal a symbol of Spain’s housing crisis.
The real estate firm responsible for her eviction aimed to lease the apartment at a much higher rate. Under public pressure, the company eventually permitted Abascal to return, but she passed away before this could happen. Her cause of death has not been revealed.
Followers of her plight gathered outside Spain’s Parliament and in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square to honor her memory, with some holding a minute’s silence. Protesters chanted, ‘Maricarmen lives, the fight goes on,’ signaling ongoing unrest over housing issues.
The response included condolences from Prime Minister Sánchez, who expressed his sympathy on X, and from conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who advised against politicizing the tragedy.
The incident underscores a pressing demand from housing activists for policy reform as Spain nears its electoral date.
