Iran-Backed Attack on Riyadh Airport

On Thursday, Houthi rebels supported by Iran launched an attack on Riyadh’s main airport, resulting in the deaths of three Saudi citizens. The attack, targeting King Khalid International Airport and a Saudia Airlines aircraft, injured several others from various nationalities. This escalation marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between the Iranian proxy group and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen.

The conflict has intensified this week, becoming a central focus of the broader Middle Eastern war. The initial attack targeted airport facilities, followed by a hit on an empty aircraft. Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for multiple missile attacks on the airport throughout the week.

Among the deceased was Capt. Hamoud Ali Alkalthami. This occurrence marks the first known attack on a Saudi national carrier since the recent Saudi-led offensive against the Houthis commenced. The Saudi aviation agency reported that injuries varied from minor to severe, affecting citizens and foreigners alike. The Houthis have warned global airlines of consequences if they continue operations in Saudi airspace.

Iran’s Peace Talks Proposals

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, announced revised proposals for renewed negotiations with the United States. During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pezeshkian expressed openness to finalize proposals through intermediaries. He emphasized past diplomatic setbacks, accusing the U.S. of undermining efforts. Iran remains committed to concluding the war while ensuring the rights of its citizens under international law.

The meeting highlighted Russia’s supportive stance in regional matters. Pezeshkian maintained that unilateral actions by the U.S. would impede progress.

USS Lincoln’s Homecoming

The USS Abraham Lincoln returned to San Diego after a 321-day deployment focused partly on support for U.S. military efforts against Iran. More than 4,500 sailors were welcomed home by friends and family, marking the end of a prolonged mission, which included over 250 uninterrupted days at sea in the Middle East.

During this emotional return, families reunited with loved ones, including new father Alexander Adkins, who met his 10-week-old son, Declan, for the first time. The carrier’s presence in the Middle East concluded in late August.

Security Alert from U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia has issued a security alert due to the ongoing attacks by Houthis on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. American travelers are advised to exercise increased caution due to potential escalations, flight cancellations, and airspace closures.

This advisory follows four attacks by the Houthis on the airport this week, resulting in casualties, including three deaths. U.S. government employees are now restricted from traveling too close to the Yemeni border and require special permission for airport travel.

U.S. Commitment to Peace Before Midterms

President Trump announced that the U.S. would refrain from attacking Iran before the upcoming midterm elections. He described conversations with Iran as productive, albeit lacking in detail.

Despite Iran’s economic and military challenges, Trump emphasized the ongoing implementation of the blockade with a notable increase in oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz, except from Iran. Reports had suggested possible new U.S. strikes on Iran. However, Trump’s social media remarks led to immediate market reactions, bringing crude oil prices from $105 to $103 per barrel.
