Chicago Bears Face Setback with Montez Sweat’s Suspension

1 hour ago 0

The Chicago Bears are experiencing a significant challenge on defense with the suspension of Montez Sweat. The veteran defensive end has been suspended for two games without pay due to a violation of the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Sweat will be eligible for reinstatement on Friday, Oct. 23, after Chicago’s Week 7 game against the New England Patriots.

This suspension means that the Bears will be missing one of their most experienced defensive players as they aim to build momentum in the early part of the season. Sweat’s absence is particularly challenging for Chicago, which is trying to recover from a tough 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Bears had won their previous two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, but were unable to maintain that success against Green Bay.

Chicago must now strategize for their upcoming matches without a key defensive figure. Sweat, who joined the Bears from the Washington Commanders in 2023, has been crucial to Chicago’s defensive strategies. The Bears acquired him with a trade, giving up a second-round draft pick, shortly after signing him to a four-year, $98 million contract extension, making him one of the top-paid defenive players in the franchise.

During his first season with Chicago, Sweat delivered 5.5 sacks, providing leadership on a defensive line in development. He followed up with ten sacks in 2025, proving his value as a primary pass-rushing asset. So far this season, Sweat has secured two sacks, one in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers and another versus Philadelphia.

Despite variations in his stats, Sweat continues to bring experience and quarterback pressure that are pivotal to the Bears’ defense. His absence will force Chicago to rethink their pressure-generating strategies along the defensive front.

Coach Ben Johnson’s staff faces the challenge of not merely replacing Sweat’s contributions but ensuring other linemen step up to maintain pressure on opponents. For a team seeking consistency after a mixed season start, this adaption is crucial.

Chicago’s current record stands at 3-2, having demonstrated potential but also experiencing setbacks against teams like Minnesota and Green Bay. The defense has shown strong performances, notably restricting Philadelphia to seven points and holding the Jets to twelve. However, the recent loss to Green Bay highlights areas needing improvement.

Green Bay’s 31 points raised questions about Chicago’s defensive capabilities against strong adversaries.

Sweat’s absence adds complexity to these concerns. The uncertainty also involves how swiftly Chicago can rebound defensively after he’s reinstated. While the substance leading to the violation hasn’t been disclosed, the Bears must focus on upcoming games without one of their core defensive players.

Chicago has demonstrated competitive potential with their defense in peak form; maintaining that level without Sweat is a challenge. As the Bears compete in the NFC North, the timing of this suspension presents additional difficulty. Though there are plenty of games left in the season, the defense must rally to preserve the progress achieved so far.
