Saints Owner Gayle Benson Expresses Frustration Over Team’s Poor Start

1 day ago 0

The New Orleans Saints are facing a challenging start to their season, which has stirred frustration not only among fans but within the organization’s leadership. Gayle Benson, the team’s principal owner, expressed her dissatisfaction on Tuesday, two days after the Saints suffered their third consecutive loss.

During a luncheon at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club, Benson addressed the team’s disappointing 1-4 record directly. ‘That is not acceptable to me,’ she stated. The struggles this season have been unexpected after an optimistic rookie year from quarterback Tyler Shough, which had raised hopes for an NFC South title and a playoff run. The season’s beginning included a close overtime defeat to the Detroit Lions, followed by a brief recovery in Week 2. However, losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and division rivals Atlanta Falcons in subsequent weeks deepened concerns. Recently, the Saints fell to the Minnesota Vikings with a 23-13 scoreline.

Benson continued to communicate her empathy for fan frustrations, acknowledging the expectations and emotional investments they put into the team. ‘And it falls short of what our fans truly deserve.’ she said. Her comments come as a rare public critique during the season, underscoring the urgency for change within the team.

In particular, Benson called out head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis. She also took personal responsibility for the current state of the franchise. Benson was clear in her expectations, stating, ‘Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform. Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.’

Mickey Loomis, a long-standing figure in the front office, was previously defended by Benson as doing a ‘great job.’ However, in light of the recent string of poor performances, she has emphasized the need for decision-making to propel the team forward. Benson said, ‘Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently, and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games.’

Reflecting on the Saints’ loss to Atlanta during a commemorative game marking the 20th anniversary of the Superdome’s restoration post-Hurricane Katrina, Benson expressed her disappointment. She concluded her remarks with a firm stance: ‘Words will not restore our fans’ confidence. Our performance must do that.’

Looking ahead, the Saints face critical matches against the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The latter game marks the NFL’s first in France, adding to the team’s mounting pressure.
