Despite concerns about his defensive strategies, Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding faced scrutiny after the team conceded 52 points to Florida three weeks ago. However, a remarkable shift occurred recently.
In their latest game, Ole Miss demonstrated formidable defensive prowess by completely shutting down Missouri in a 31-3 victory. The Tigers entered the matchup with an impressive top-ten rushing attack and a standout quarterback, Austin Simmons. Yet, the Rebels’ defense held them to a mere 39 yards rushing and consistently pressured Simmons throughout the game. Although he managed to throw for 340 yards, Simmons needed almost 50 attempts, largely due to the relentless Ole Miss defense.
On the offensive side, Trinidad Chambliss, the Ole Miss quarterback, showed resilience. While he wasn’t flawless, Chambliss delivered when needed, scoring three touchdowns through the air and adding another on the ground. The Rebels excelled in their rushing game, tallying 257 yards largely thanks to the efforts of Kewan Lacy and Makhi Frazier.
Missouri had been eyeing a potential College Football Playoff spot, but the lopsided defeat to Ole Miss now alters their postseason prospects. In contrast, Ole Miss remains in contention for their season goals, preparing to face the Texas Longhorns and a challenging November schedule that includes matchups with Georgia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State.
For Missouri, the upcoming game against Arkansas offers a chance for recovery. The coming weeks will test both teams as they navigate the remainder of their seasons.
