Morgan Park Triumphs in City Championship with Key Plays from Travezz Jones

1 hour ago 0

Morgan Park’s senior wide receiver, Travezz Jones, demonstrates impressive skill at positioning himself on the field. Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 165 pounds, Jones combines his agility with an acute sense of timing. Reflecting on his performance, he stated, “The ball was there, and I knew I had to help out my team and get us going because we were playing kind of flat. That brought us all of the energy that we needed.” His contributions were crucial during the Mustangs’ 24-14 victory over Kenwood in the city championship game held at Lane Stadium in Chicago.

Jones’ third-quarter touchdown catch and subsequent 2-point conversion significantly contributed to the comeback, erasing Kenwood’s 14-8 lead at halftime. Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. demonstrated strong performance with 14 completions out of 21 attempts, accumulating 181 yards and three touchdown passes for Morgan Park, which boasts an 8-1 record and was victorious in the Public League Red Star title. Jaxon Bland, a junior wide receiver, also secured a touchdown catch and a 2-point conversion. Meanwhile, Kenwood’s junior quarterback Malachi Henigan threw a notable 78-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Lawrence Carr and added his own four-yard touchdown run, achieving a 6-3 record with the Public League Red Shield title.

“I’ve had him all four years, and he’s just really come of age and become so much more mature,”

Morgan Park’s coach Chris James remarked when discussing Jones’ growth and consistency. “When we needed him the most, he really stepped up and made plays. He’s always ready to make plays.” Jones was a standout on the field with a team-best performance, capturing five passes for a total of 76 yards.

Jones’ ability in the open field, combined with his rapid pace, posed significant challenges for Kenwood’s defense. “My game is fast and physical, and they tried to get me out of my game with their talking,” Jones noted. “All that did was put a bigger target on their back.” He was instrumental in sealing the game, with a pivotal 23-yard catch on third-and-19 facilitating Bland’s decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jones effectively exploits field positions to maximize mismatches, showcasing alertness when playing as a slot receiver. He identifies his route running, ability to track the ball, and excellent hands as key strengths in his athletic profile. “Each year, my role has gotten bigger, and now I feel like I’m one of the main pieces of the offense,” he mentioned. Already noted for his talent and receiving a scholarship offer from Western Illinois, Jones represents a continuation of Morgan Park’s tradition of producing college receivers. Inspired by his older cousins, Jones realized his potential from a young age. “My bigger cousins were a big influence on me, and I recognized ever since I was a kid that I had talent,” Jones shared.

The camaraderie between Jones, Smith, and Bland results in productive field connections. Jones, whose play often speaks for itself, acknowledges his innate competitiveness, stating, “That competitive part, I think, is just something I was born with. When I touch the ball, I just go out and do my thing.”
