Lane Kiffin’s Roller Coaster Season with LSU

2 hours ago 0

Lane Kiffin’s journey as the head coach of the LSU Tigers has been anything but smooth. His first season is marked by ups and downs, evident by a triumphant opening weekend win against Clemson and a staggering loss to Kentucky, a team they were expected to defeat easily. The defeat at Ole Miss, an emotional return to Oxford, underscored challenges Kiffin was hired to overcome.

Despite LSU’s rocky start, with two losses in seven games, the team faces a challenging line-up for the rest of the season. Upcoming matches include road games against Auburn and Tennessee, a home contest against Alabama, and a season-ending match at Arkansas. With aspirations for the College Football Playoff, victory in these games is crucial for Kiffin and the team.

Kiffin voiced concerns over the SEC’s new nine-game conference schedule, particularly its impact on team records and injuries. He stated, “You’re going to take on eight more losses… that’s going to happen.” Kiffin used Auburn as an example, pointing out that removing a single SEC loss could position them as a top-10 team. “Auburn isn’t ranked because they don’t deserve it, win over Georgia or not,” he added.

When questioned about any positives of the expanded schedule, Kiffin’s response was brief: “No.” He highlighted challenges like player injuries and transfers through the portal, emphasizing the difficulty in building team depth with additional conference games.

This argument mirrors those previously made by other conferences when SEC maintained an eight-game schedule. Kiffin’s frustration underscores how the new schedule reveals conference weaknesses, wherein they cannot lean on non-conference victories to boost rankings.

Despite claims of lacking “metrics” similar to other sports, college football has measures like ESPN’s SP+ rankings, which consider team efficiency across various dimensions. This season, the SEC falls short compared to the Big Ten’s depth. Auburn and other SEC teams like Texas A&M and Oklahoma sit outside the top-30, suggesting that objective metrics can reveal discrepancies previously shielded by the SEC’s reputation.

Currently, SEC holds a unique position with multiple two-loss teams still ranked, unlike any other conference. This standing hints at inherent biases despite Kiffin’s gripes. The SEC’s reputation endures in human polls, but the conference’s actual performance may not be as robust as it once appeared.

Kiffin will continue to face scrutiny and skepticism. His tenure at LSU hinges on navigating these challenges while aiming to place the Tigers back in contenders’ conversations.
