Maine Senate Race Draws National Attention

2 hours ago 0

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Manchin are campaigning in Maine this week amidst a close U.S. Senate race. The contest features Republican Senator Susan Collins against Democrat Troy Jackson. Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York, is known for her strong progressive stance, while Manchin, formerly a Democratic Senator from West Virginia, is known for his moderate views. Now independent, Manchin recently left the Democratic Party in May 2024.

This week, both politicians are in Maine supporting different candidates in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections. Manchin will support Collins in Androscoggin County on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez will join Jackson in Portland on Thursday.

Maine Senate Race Becomes Battleground

The race in Maine is crucial for both parties. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority. Democrats need to flip four seats for control, with Vice President JD Vance as the tiebreaker. Collins is considered vulnerable, representing a state where Donald Trump was defeated in previous presidential races. Economic frustration and Trump’s declining approval have added challenges for Republicans.

Despite these challenges, Collins remains a strong contender. Her bipartisan appeal and personal popularity, along with her role as the Appropriations Committee Chair, provide significant advantages. A loss for Democrats here would complicate their path to a Senate majority.

AOC, Manchin Campaigning in Maine: What to Know

Manchin and Collins have had a longstanding alliance due to their moderate stances. Manchin previously endorsed Collins, describing her as the most centrist and independent senator he has encountered.

Ocasio-Cortez is set to appear at a “Students vs. Billionaires” town hall in Portland, organized by the progressive group More Perfect University. Jackson will also attend. Ocasio-Cortez has a strong following among younger, progressive voters but did not endorse Graham Platner, the Democrat who withdrew over unproven assault allegations.

In a social media post, Jackson criticized Manchin as emblematic of politics that serve corporations over the people. He argued both Manchin and Collins align with powerful interests.

AOC and Manchin History

Ocasio-Cortez and Manchin have frequently clashed over Democratic policy directions. Their differing views highlight the divide between progressive and centrist Democrats.

Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Green New Deal in 2019, aiming to address climate change. Manchin criticized it as unrealistic, emphasizing practical energy solutions without dismissing coal, gas, and oil.

Following the 2020 election, Manchin distanced himself from the progressive wing, taking a stance against the “Defund the Police” movement. He has publicly questioned Ocasio-Cortez’s legislative impact, claiming she focuses more on social media. Ocasio-Cortez has shot back, criticizing Manchin’s relationships with corporations and his opposition to the filibuster abolition.

What Latest Polls Show About the Maine Senate Race

The Maine Senate race is expected to be tightly contested. A recent Suffolk University poll showed Jackson leading by two points. InsiderAdvantage and The Washington Post also provided similar results, though Collins’s past electoral success suggests polls might underestimate her support.

Maine Senate Race: Latest Developments

Collins and Jackson have participated in final debates. An interruption by a protester drew sharp exchanges between them. Jackson refused to apologize for his comments, emphasizing his campaign’s focus on Mainers’ concerns.

Financial disclosures reveal that Jackson outraised Collins in recent months, but trails overall in fundraising. He has gained endorsements from Barack Obama and support from Bernie Sanders. Susan Collins, however, reported no planned visit from Trump, noting potential distance from his favor.

Maine Democrats had a registration advantage as of early this year with more unaffiliated voters also in the mix. Absentee voting began October 5, continuing until October 29, with varied polling hours based on town populations.
