Paul George made a stunning debut with the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, racking up 31 points in only three quarters against the Detroit Pistons. With a quarter still to play, George set a new franchise record for most points in a Celtics debut, overtaking the previous record set by Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis had scored 30 points in his first game for the Celtics in 2023.
At 36 years old, George is entering his 17th NBA season. He joined Boston in the offseason through a significant trade that sent Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers. During the game, George demonstrated impressive shooting ability by hitting six out of his eight 3-point attempts in the first three quarters. If he continues this level of performance, he will serve as a strong complement to star forward Jayson Tatum.
George took on the scoring responsibilities for the team, particularly as Tatum struggled, missing all seven of his attempts from the 3-point line. Although George scored 38 points in total, the Celtics fell short, losing to the Pistons with a final score of 121-113.
