The New York Giants faced questions surrounding their star running back, Cam Skattebo, after he did not carry the ball in the recent game against the New Orleans Saints. Skattebo admitted that this absence stemmed from fumbling during the prior game against the Washington Commanders.
“I got punished for what I did last week,” Skattebo told reporters, acknowledging the fumble’s repercussions. He emphasized understanding the decision and the need to be prepared for future opportunities. “I didn’t expect to have zero carries, but I was expected not to play much,” he said. “Coach’s message is to keep your head down and keep going. They know my capability as a player, and I have to keep doing my job well.”
Not everyone accepted Skattebo’s explanation. Former Giants running back Tiki Barber, appearing on the WFAN Giants postgame show, suggested a deeper issue affecting Skattebo’s game time.
Tiki Barber commented on Skattebo’s situation: “There have been a lot of negative plays for him, misreading runs, or being too fast; understanding protection responsibilities for third down…those details are critical.” Barber insisted the problem extended beyond a simple fumble.
Amid this uncertainty, the Giants released former Pro Bowler Najee Harris. Tyrone Tracy Jr. has shown promise but remains inconsistent. This situation underscores the team’s need for a reliable lead running back.
Skattebo remains the team’s top talent but faces challenges off and on the field. If Barber’s insights hold true, Skattebo would benefit from focusing on performance improvements to demonstrate progress to head coach John Harbaugh.
