Young Conservatives Urged to Engage Despite Challenges

37 minutes ago 0

Recently, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin visited the University of Chicago with a message directed at young conservatives. Her visit was initially low-profile, but her words carried significant implications.

Slotkin addressed her audience with careful language, focusing on middle-class advocacy and criticizing President Trump’s economic strategies. She also hinted at her presidential ambitions for 2028. However, among her statements was a direct warning to young conservatives. She suggested targeting those around the president could discourage young people from participating in the Trump administration. The implication was clear: young conservatives might face significant challenges if they chose to work in government roles under the current administration.

“That might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want,” Slotkin remarked, envisioning the considerations of potential young participants.

As someone who has served in government roles, such as a United States Senate Page, hearing Slotkin’s words resonated personally. The Senate Page program selected high school juniors nationwide to engage in legislative work while attending school. It offered insights into government operations and fostered friendships beyond political views.

When asked about my views after completing the program, many assumed pessimism due to political tensions. Instead, I left with optimism, spurred by bipartisan encouragement from senators to participate in politics.

Slotkin’s comments clash with my experiences. Nonetheless, I maintain hope that the Senate can remain a space for meaningful deliberation and young voices. I see her remarks as an outlier rather than the norm.

Arriving during an election cycle, Slotkin’s words hold strategic political weight. Her rhetoric signals potential Democratic actions if they regain congressional power. Young potential public servants could find themselves caught in partisan crossfire, especially if Slotkin pursues presidential aspirations in 2028.

Young conservatives must make their voices heard. Whether highly educated or not, every individual’s opinion matters. If you possess the capability and desire to serve, your contribution can be significant.

Challenges are inevitable. Slotkin’s perspective suggests potential personal sacrifice for young conservatives in public service. During the Biden administration, many faced ostracism for their political views. Recent events, such as Charlie Kirk’s tragic death, underscore the dangers and hostility that can accompany political engagement.

Yet, these challenges reaffirm the importance of participating in government. The risk of power being wielded for vengeance requires vigilance and action from new generations. John Adams emphasized the role of youth as fundamental to safeguarding our nation’s values, and this message endures. Current circumstances do not diminish its relevance.

Instead of being deterred, young people should consider these circumstances as motivation. Participation is essential for the Republic’s future, and overcoming adversity can discharge a vital role in shaping it.
