Federal prosecutors have announced the arrest of Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI engineer. He allegedly installed a sophisticated listening device in an executive conference room at OpenAI. Authorities apprehended him while planning to leave for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Connections to Saudi Royalty
Prosecutors revealed that Alfozan was in frequent contact with a Saudi royal family member. Messages suggested encouragement to return to Saudi Arabia to join an AI initiative. His role at OpenAI included a salary of $385,000 annually with a $2.2 million equity grant.
Investigation Details
An 11-page court filing detailed how Alfozan used AI tools for developing encrypted recording devices. He allegedly identified key meeting rooms used by OpenAI executives, government officials, and partners. Investigators found evidence that he planned to expand surveillance efforts.
Investigators allege that on Sept. 28, Alfozan installed a surreptitious audio recording device into a USB port on the back of a television in an executive OpenAI conference room.
Photos and internal searches revealed locations he targeted for surveillance. There were notes showing plans to recover devices before leaving the company.
Technical Evidence
Investigators discovered Alfozan’s use of an AI chatbot to refine his recording device. Requests included building a continuous audio recorder, capturing audio, and encrypting data. These meetings often discussed confidential information, potentially affecting U.S. national security.
Legal Proceedings
Alfozan was arrested on October 9 before his planned departure to Saudi Arabia. His wife and son left the day after, on tickets allegedly bought by a Saudi military official. Alfozan, with no prior criminal record, had planned parental leave beginning in October 2026.
At his detention hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Alex Tse denied his release to home confinement. The government labeled him a flight risk due to his financial means and connections. His trial is scheduled for next month.
