Interior’s First Offshore Mining Lease Sale

1 day ago 0

The Trump administration has announced its decision to lease ocean tracts off the coast of American Samoa for deep-sea mining. This marks the first time the U.S. government has offered offshore mining leases. The seafloor may contain valuable minerals, and approximately 32 million acres will be available for companies to bid on, with the aim of extracting these resources.

The government intends to expand mining both onshore and offshore. Last year, the president signed an executive order to accelerate the deep-sea mining process. The lease sale is scheduled for November 19. Winning bidders will be allowed to perform initial activities, such as mapping, but mining will not commence automatically.

In related policy developments, changes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s structure are being considered. The administration is also looking to enhance a controversial pipeline in the Northeast.

In legal matters, a federal judge questioned plans to close and renovate East Potomac Park despite a court order to pause work. Additionally, Democracy Defenders Fund and Reporters Without Borders filed a Hatch Act complaint involving campaign activities in Alaska.
