Federal Judge Warns Trump of Sanctions Over BBC Lawsuit

46 minutes ago 0

A federal judge has warned former President Donald Trump about potential sanctions for not participating in his lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué A. Lett indicated that Trump had been “admonished” for his absence in the litigation, which seeks $10 billion from the UK’s public broadcaster for alleged defamation and deception.

The judge’s warnings came after the BBC had to file five discovery requests due to Trump’s “disregard” for court procedures. The BBC’s current demand involves questioning Trump under oath. Initially, a deposition was agreed upon for October. Yet, Trump’s team canceled citing “matters of national importance,” according to BBC attorneys.

Judge Lett stated that non-compliance with court orders would result in sanctions. She scheduled a discovery hearing to consider the BBC’s motion to compel Trump’s testimony and demanded a response from Trump to the BBC’s arguments.

Trump’s Legal Team Responds

Trump’s legal team has not directly responded to Judge Lett’s orders. However, a spokesperson stated that the BBC engaged in a “malicious” and “deceptive” act aimed at interfering with the 2024 Presidential Election by altering Trump’s speech. Trump’s suit argues that the BBC has displayed a consistent pattern of negative coverage.

This lawsuit, initiated in Florida last December, accuses the BBC of airing a distorted version of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech, suggesting he incited violence. Trump demands $5 billion for defamation and another $5 billion for unfair trade practices.

BBC Seeks to Compel Trump’s Deposition

The BBC responded by requesting a court order compelling Trump to be deposed, stating that delay tactics are being used. BBC attorney Charles D. Tobin stressed that Trump, as the central figure, must be questioned promptly as discovery ends soon. Despite efforts since July to schedule the deposition, Trump’s availability has become uncertain.

The BBC claims that Trump’s legal counsel recently indicated he is unavailable for the deposition before mid-January, after discovery’s conclusion in December. The legal stance maintains that Trump accepted litigation obligations upon filing the lawsuit.

Details on the BBC Documentary

The controversy centers around a BBC Panorama episode that combined elements of Trump’s speech delivered on January 6, 2021. Critics argue this edit created a misleading portrayal of Trump’s statements, suggesting a call for violent action.

An internal memo from ex-BBC advisor Michael Prescott criticized the documentary for perceived bias against Trump. BBC chair Samir Shah acknowledged the erroneous edit but denied burying the issues, noting corrections and editorial changes were made to clarify the mistake. BBC Director General Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness resigned amid the scandal.
