Calls for Action Amid Rising Violence Against Palestinian Christians in West Bank

19 minutes ago 0

Christian advocates are urging President Donald Trump to persuade Israel to safeguard Palestinian Christian communities from escalating settler violence. There is a growing alarm that these attacks, coupled with restrictions, are driving Christians out of the West Bank, thus dismantling an ancient Christian presence in the Holy Land, as reported to Newsweek.

Trump expressed robust support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for reelection, following an alleged attack on an American journalist by settlers in the occupied West Bank. Trump’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, described the incident as a ‘despicable act of terror’ and called for those responsible to be prosecuted.

Huckabee indicated the U.S. Embassy’s involvement in efforts urging Israeli forces to act against the settlers. Israeli police have launched investigations, with Netanyahu framing the situation as a ‘confrontation’ amid several ‘disputed incidents,’ hinting at possible provocations by Palestinians or ‘far-left’ activists.

“Christians in the West Bank are facing an existential threat – at risk of erasure in a matter of years if settler violence and pressure continue to escalate,” Alexandria Pouliot, the Save West Bank Christians campaign leader, told Newsweek.

Similarly, Reverend Mae Elise Cannon echoes the growing fears of displacement among Christian families in the West Bank. She asserts these families are contemplating or already undertaking steps to emigrate due to the increasingly hostile conditions they face.

Despite these appeals, a White House official stated their commitment to communicating the necessity of a ‘stable’ West Bank for regional security as part of their peace strategy.

While Israeli leaders have ceremonially embraced Christian communities, concerns persist over their safety. President Isaac Herzog welcomed Christian leaders last year, affirming his commitment to religious freedom and community prosperity.

Trump’s Israel Policy and Christianity

Former President Trump’s administration has reinforced its backing of Israel, often aligning this support with evangelical Christian interests. Significant policies, such as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, were positioned as moves favoring evangelicals.

Mike Huckabee acknowledged this connection, asserting at a Jerusalem summit that supporting Israel aligns with divine promises made to Abraham. However, Huckabee has been vocal against settler violence affecting Christians, condemning such acts as ‘senseless violence.’

Numerous reports highlight a worrying trend of Christians exiting the West Bank. Independent studies and figures from religious communities indicate significant drops in Christian populations across key areas like Bethlehem and Taybeh.

Current estimates from the U.S. State Department reveal that Christians make up less than 2 percent of the West Bank’s population. The emigration of Christians, especially after escalating violence, underlines an acute crisis.

Impact on Remaining Christian Communities

The Christians who remain confront violence and severe disruptions to their livelihoods. For instance, Taybeh’s olive harvest—the village’s crucial income source—has been impeded for four consecutive years.

The Israeli authorities declared Taybeh a closed military zone, ostensibly to curb violent attacks while continuing to permit settler movements. This dramatically affects the residents’ access to their agricultural resources and potential for income.

International Concerns and U.S. Policy

Despite strong backing for Israel, the U.S. government continues to denounce settler violence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently articulated the need for Israel to intensify its countermeasures against such aggression and ensure accountability.

Meanwhile, visits by U.S. diplomats to affected areas demonstrate international scrutiny over the situation, with pledges to implement protective strategies for vulnerable communities.

However, the challenge persists as the Israeli government contends with extremist elements responsible for these violent acts while navigating the broader geopolitical tensions.
