Former OpenAI Engineer Faces Charges for Allegedly Planting Listening Devices with Foreign Connections

2 hours ago 0

Federal prosecutors have accused Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former engineer at OpenAI, of placing listening devices within the company’s facilities. The investigation aims to determine if the alleged surveillance was intended to benefit a foreign government, specifically focusing on Saudi Arabia.

Connections to Saudi Arabia

According to prosecutors, Alfozan communicated frequently with a member of the Saudi royal family. This individual expressed interest in recruiting him for a Saudi artificial intelligence program. Although no evidence suggests that Saudi Arabia directed the surveillance, this relationship remains under scrutiny.

Surveillance Methods

Alfozan allegedly researched and constructed an encrypted recording device capable of live listening. He used internal tools at OpenAI to locate meeting rooms utilized by executives. In late September, he reportedly hid a customized audio recorder behind a television in an executive conference room. This room hosted critical meetings involving proprietary research and strategic decisions.

Discovery and Arrest

OpenAI security discovered a second device in a bag left by Alfozan. A search of his home revealed similar equipment and photographs indicating reconnaissance of additional sites within OpenAI. The FBI arrested Alfozan on October 9, 2026. He was preparing for international travel with tickets for Riyadh, a trip allegedly facilitated by Saudi officials.

Potential Foreign Assistance

Following Alfozan’s arrest, Saudi government officials arranged travel for his wife and son. This involvement has led prosecutors to argue that Alfozan could access assistance from the Saudi government if released. They highlight a similar case involving a former Twitter employee who allegedly received foreign support after being confronted over internal data access.

Legal Proceedings

Alfozan faces charges for using a device to intercept oral communications. Prosecutors seek to keep him detained, citing concerns about flight risk and potential danger. At the time of his arrest, he was earning $385,000 yearly and had received significant equity from OpenAI.
