Maria Marszewski’s Legacy in Chicago
Maria Marszewski, known to her friends and regulars by just her first name, built a significant reputation in Chicago. Originally Kim Yong Soon, she immigrated from South Korea to Chicago’s South Side with her husband 60 years ago. She became a widow 13 years later, raising two sons while managing her husband’s bar.
From Beautician to Business Mogul
Maria’s career began as a licensed beautician. She transitioned into real estate, purchasing a strip mall and creating her own restaurant. Eventually, she acquired a building in Bridgeport, transforming an existing bar and liquor store into Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar in 2010.

In a recent interview, Maria shared that her birth name was Kim Yong Soon. She received her Christian name, Maria, at age 11 from a Catholic priest. She was born on February 7, 1937, in Pusan, Korea, now known as Busan.
Maria moved to Chicago in 1966 after marrying James Marszewski in South Korea. Initially a beautician, Maria earned her cosmetology license in the U.S. in the early 1970s. She opened a basement beauty shop specializing in hair services in Mount Greenwood.
After her husband’s passing in 1979, she managed his bar before selling it. Maria invested in real estate, establishing a restaurant offering Korean and Japanese cuisines. Her restaurant, House of Kim, included unique elements like a pond hosting a turtle named Gamera, inspired by a film character.

Originally Kaplan’s Liquors, the business was acquired by Maria in 1986. Regular patrons referred to it as Maria’s. Her sons grew up in the business and officially dedicated it to her in 2010.
Maria was known as The Boss and The Duchess of Bridgeport. Her son, Mike Marszewski, now owns the bar. A notable dish is Marz Beer paired with Korean Polish sausage, crafted by chef Won Kim. Maria’s Standard includes unique toppings like seasonal kimchi and soju mustard on a brioche bun.
Memorable Moments and Advice
Maria cherishes feeding and educating her children through her business ventures. She continues to visit her namesake bar regularly, cautioning the younger generation against excessive drinking. Maria prefers hot black tea or coffee, never alcohol.
