Opening of Union Station
In 1925, Union Station opened its doors in Chicago. It was considered “America’s latest triumph in railroading” at the time. The station was located alongside the Chicago River, with a concourse building in the foreground and a larger office building and main waiting room situated behind. This marked a significant development in the city’s rail transport infrastructure.
Ben Hecht’s Oscar Win
During the first Academy Awards in 1929, Ben Hecht, a former Chicago newspaperman, won an Oscar for Distinguished Achievement in Writing the Original Story for the film “Underworld.” Notably, the Oscar statuette was manufactured in Chicago. Today, Hecht’s Oscar is kept at the Newberry Library, where it remains the most requested artifact.
Carlton Fisk’s Achievement
In 1984, White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk broke out of a challenging 0-for-18 slump by hitting for the cycle in a game against the Kansas City Royals. Fisk achieved a single, double, triple, and home run during a 7-6 loss at Comiskey Park. Reflecting on the event, Fisk commented on how catching 25 innings earlier in the month fatigued him, impacting his performance.
Michael Jordan’s Rookie Year
Michael Jordan, playing for the Chicago Bulls, was recognized as NBA Rookie of the Year in 1985. Jordan played 82 games and averaged 28.2 points. He was honored with the award the following month, expressing uncertainty about replicating such a successful season with all the focus on his career.
