The Stade de la Beaujoire witnessed shocking chaos on Sunday when violence erupted during a Ligue 1 match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC. The match, which was level at 0-0, was abandoned after only 22 minutes due to rioting fans storming the pitch.
A group of hooded ultras, angry about Nantes’ poor season, breached stadium security, turning the arena into a chaotic scene. With the score still goalless, the stadium erupted as furious Nantes supporters overwhelmed stewards and broke through security barriers.
“The supporters have taken things too far. Their actions are unacceptable,” said Marina Ferrari, France’s Minister of Sports, condemning the pitch invasion.
During the incident, rioters clad in black hurled flares and pyrotechnics onto the playing surface. Players from both teams ran to the safety of their locker rooms as the pitch was overrun. Anti-riot police, equipped with tactical gear, intervened to manage the escalating unrest and finally succeeded in pushing the invading supporters back to the stands.
The rapid deterioration of the match’s security drew swift condemnation from French authorities. Local officials, along with referees, decided the players’ safety could not be assured, resulting in the match being permanently canceled.
French football authorities now face mounting pressure to address the ongoing hooliganism issue affecting the sport. FC Nantes, already struggling with relegation concerns, might face severe repercussions due to the actions of their own fans.
