A suspected drug smuggler was apprehended near California’s coastline after federal agents discovered $6.4 million worth of cocaine on an oil tanker allegedly linked to a Mexican drug cartel.
Arrest and Charges
Ceasar Tubay Gelacio Jr., 43, from the Philippines, faces charges of importing a controlled substance. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California reported the arrest.
Joint Operation
A collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Coast Guard resulted in a search of the Motor Tanker Aquatravesia at the Port of Los Angeles. A Coast Guard detection canine indicated the presence of contraband, leading investigators to confirm the discovery of 500 pounds of cocaine valued at $6.4 million.
“This operation highlights Homeland Security Investigations’ unwavering commitment to combating transnational crime and safeguarding the United States from illicit narcotics,” stated Eddy Wang, HSI Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge.
HSI’s rapid response and investigative skills were crucial in seizing the cocaine headed for U.S. communities. They are committed to intercepting efforts to exploit ports and disrupting criminal organizations.
Coordination and Arrest
Captain Stacey Crecy of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach emphasized the importance of agency coordination in dismantling drug smuggling operations. The efforts allowed for quick detainment of suspects and protection of the maritime transportation system.
Background and Investigation
An affidavit filed disclosed that authorities had information about the Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged Aquatravesia carrying drugs from Ecuador destined for a Mexican cartel. Crew members reportedly discovered packages in the ship’s garbage room believed to contain narcotics.
The ship’s captain, after interviewing crew members, learned the drugs allegedly belonged to Gelacio, who later faced federal charges. When the ship was in Mexican waters, cartel members were expected to retrieve the drugs offshore.
Consequences and Ongoing Investigations
If convicted, Gelacio could face life in prison. The operation also led to the arrest of two additional individuals.
