Panathenaic Stadium Undergoes Historic Cleaning and Renovation

46 minutes ago 0

In Athens, Greece, the iconic Panathenaic Stadium, known locally as ‘Kallimarmaro’ or ‘beautiful marble,’ is undergoing a significant refurbishment. This historic site, a venue for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, is receiving its first comprehensive cleaning in over a hundred years. The U-shaped stadium, crafted entirely from white marble, is set to serve as the departure point for the Olympic flame for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

A Fresh Look Ahead of LA 2028

The stadium shares the same opulent marble used in the construction of the Acropolis, necessitating a careful cleaning process. Over time, weathering and intensive visitor traffic have altered the monument’s appearance. Workers clad in white and blue overalls meticulously clean the 47 steep tiers using spray lances and pure water at controlled low pressure. As they proceed, machines collect the runoff water.

The goal of cleaning is not to make everything white. It’s to remove the dirt and the first layers of organic material that are deposited on the surface, said Dimitris Selemis, a senior conservator on the site. He added that areas less exposed to sunlight tend to gather more dirt and have more weed growth.

Challenges in the Cleaning Process

The restoration team is also dealing with hardened chewing gum, along with damage from high heels and soft-drink stains, which have discolored the marble. The efforts aim to reveal the venue’s original shine, which initially earned it the nickname ‘Kallimarmaro.’

Isidoros Kouvelos, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, emphasized the significance of this cleanup. “We call it Kallimarmaro because it is made of the finest marble, the best that was ever produced. We are very proud of it,” he said, highlighting the necessity of addressing the buildup accumulated over the years.

A Venue Rich in History

Nestled in a natural ravine, the Panathenaic Stadium has a rich history, from ancient Greek competitions to Roman spectacles. After its revival in 1896 for the modern Olympic Games, it has hosted various events including fashion shows, rock concerts, and national ceremonies. It also draws numerous tourists today.

Besides cleaning, the overhaul includes laying a new track, upgrading lighting, and enhancing support facilities. This project, funded by a private shipping company and supervised by the Hellenic Olympic Committee and Culture Ministry experts, will continue through 2026. The current focus is on the stadium’s ‘sling’ or curved end.

Upcoming Landmark Events

The venue will soon host the torch-passing ceremony on September 10, in preparation for the Dakar Youth Olympics in Senegal scheduled for October 31 to November 13. This event marks the first Olympic competition ever held in Africa, with IOC President Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe expected to attend.
