Kyle Busch, a celebrated two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, passed away on Thursday due to complications from severe pneumonia that developed into sepsis. This was announced by his family in a statement on Saturday.
Vice President Dakota Hunter of Kyle Busch Companies released the family’s statement soon after the tragic death of Busch, aged 41. Busch, known for his significant impact on NASCAR, passed away following hospitalization.
Busch had previously celebrated a victory in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Richmond International Raceway on September 5, 2014. The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family revealed pneumonia escalated to sepsis, causing serious complications.
Busch was admitted to the hospital earlier in the week after collapsing in a Chevrolet simulator. A 911 call disclosed Busch was coughing blood and having difficulty breathing, though he was reportedly alert during the time.
Busch, driver of the No. 8 Car, was set to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His storied career in the Cup Series began in 2004, accumulating 762 starts and achieving 63 wins. He won championships in 2015 and 2019 and secured 234 victories across NASCAR’s three national series.
Busch held the record for wins in both the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. His recent victory at the NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on April 23, 2023, highlighted his skill.
After Busch’s passing, NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell paid tribute to him in a press conference, describing Busch as an ‘American badass.’ O’Donnell emphasized how Busch embodied the spirit of a race-car driver, making a mark in the sport with his fierce competitive nature.
