Gov. Mikie Sherrill participated in a protest at an immigration detention center in New Jersey. This event marks another conflict between her and the Trump administration over immigration policies.
The Protest at Delaney Hall
On Monday, Gov. Sherrill stood alongside protesters outside Delaney Hall in Newark, responding to a hunger strike by detainees in its fourth day. The governor, a Democrat vocal in her opposition to current immigration measures, sought access to the facility. She met with families of detainees who reported issues with food quality and medical care.
Protesters displayed signs and chanted “Free Them All!” as they expressed solidarity with the detainees. In addressing the crowd, Sherrill emphasized, “No matter what your immigration status is, you shouldn’t be treated with anything less than dignity in this country.” Dressed casually for Memorial Day, she offered comfort to emotional relatives at the scene.
Immigration Policy Clashes
Gov. Sherrill has continually opposed policies from President Trump’s administration that have sparked nationwide demonstrations. Recently, the administration sued her and New Jersey’s attorney general over a law preventing law enforcement, including ICE agents, from wearing masks while on duty.
The privately operated 1,000-bed detention center has become central to the immigration policy debates. Since reopening last year, it has housed many immigrants detained throughout New York City and the Northeast. This comes as enforcement agents have increased operations targeting homes, courthouses, and federal offices.
This lawsuit is at least the second attempt by the Trump administration to challenge immigration-related decisions made by Gov. Sherrill.
