The Chicago Cubs are navigating a tough season, attempting to hold on to hope despite recent setbacks. With a significant dip in performance over the last few weeks, the team is striving to keep a positive outlook. Players and management firmly believe in turning things around.
Since their winning streak early in May, the Cubs have struggled. Their recent loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a 2-1 defeat, marked their ninth consecutive defeat. This brings their record to 29 wins and 25 losses, with only two victories in the last 15 games. Despite some strong pitching from right-hander Ben Brown, who allowed just one run and four hits in six innings, the team’s offense fell short once again.
Manager Craig Counsell has been altering the lineup, seeking a way to rejuvenate the team’s offense. Pete Crow-Armstrong, batting leadoff, showed promise with three hits and three walks. Despite his efforts, including several hard-hit balls, bad luck prevented them from translating into more hits.
“We’ve got to play better,” Counsell stated frankly. “Our bats need improvement, pitching needs to be more effective, and overall contributions from players need to rise. As coaching staff, it’s on us to guide them to better performance.”
The Cubs saw an opportunity in the second inning when bases were loaded against Pirates’ starter Carmen Mlodzinski. However, Dansby Swanson struck out on a pitch across the batter’s box, ending the inning.
Swanson commented on the pressure: “At times when luck doesn’t favor you, the desire to do well can lead to added pressure. It’s crucial to stay grounded and approach tomorrow with fresh perspective.”
While the overall performance has been inconsistent, Michael Busch has maintained strong form. Standing out, he hit a home run, providing the Cubs’ sole run of the game.
Ben Brown remains a strong presence. In his recent appearances following Matthew Boyd’s injury, Brown achieved a 1.89 ERA. His varied pitching strategy keeps opponents guessing, evident in his 31 strikes and whiffs against the Pirates.
Next, the Cubs will look to Jordan Wicks as he steps in to prevent a 10-game losing streak. The team acknowledges their current struggles are not a reflection of their potential. Brown added, “The guys are working hard despite our results. Baseball can be challenging, but playing with freedom and supporting each other is key as we try to improve.”
