Debbie Wasserman Schultz Faces Criticism Over District 20 Bid

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who has long served as a Congressional Democrat, announced her intention to run for Florida’s District 20 following a recent redistricting. If she wins, she would serve areas including southern Coral Springs, North Lauderdale, and surrounding cities.

Her decision sparked backlash from almost all Democratic National Committee (DNC) members in Florida. They condemned her candidacy in a district that was originally structured to reflect Black voters, but it has been revised due to redistricting efforts led by Governor Ron DeSantis. In a public statement, a group of 10 Florida DNC members criticized this move, highlighting the party’s challenge in maintaining credibility while Bahamians address the dismantling of Black political power.

The letter was signed by all but two of the 11 non-officer elected members of the Florida DNC as well as the state’s Democratic Party’s first vice chair, Daniel Henry. This took place after Wasserman Schultz declared her intention to compete for Florida’s 20th District amidst the redrawing of congressional boundaries. This redistricting maintained only three Democratic-leaning districts out of five in South Florida.

Wasserman Schultz has served in Congress for over two decades. Her choice to run in a district considered a sure Democratic seat instead of more contested regions drawn to favor Republicans has drawn scrutiny. She resides in Florida’s newly drawn 22nd District, spanning from Coral Springs to Marco Island. Within the newly redrawn map, her previous voter base has been divided, with only a small segment incorporated into the 20th District.

Critics claim she aims to leverage a campaign fund of $2.5 million in an easier district to secure her political standing. In response, Florida DNC members emphasized the contrast between pledging voting rights and racial justice while disrupting Black political power when it’s politically advantageous.

During an interview with the Miami Herald, Wasserman Schultz downplayed the criticism as being spurred by those already running for the district. However, the DNC members’ statement is a strong intra-party rebuke. Wasserman Schultz led the DNC from 2011 to 2016.

Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump intentionally disrupted Broward’s congressional districts to dilute its power.

The 20th District has historical significance as a Black-majority district established under the Voting Rights Act in the 1990s, initially represented by Alcee Hastings, later by Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. She resigned recently to re-run for office.

Governor DeSantis deliberately targeted the 20th District, anticipating changes in the Supreme Court’s stance on the Voting Rights Act. Wasserman Schultz refutes allegations that she’s exploiting Black voters’ disempowerment, arguing for her longstanding connection to Broward County.

Florida’s DNC members view this decision as part of a broader political strategy undermining Black voter representation. They assert strongly that representation and lived experience hold significant value.
