The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has scheduled the initial Democratic presidential primary for January 22, 2028. South Carolina voters will cast these first ballots. This strategy is designed to enhance the influence of Black and Latino voters in the nomination process. Following South Carolina, Nevada is set to hold its primary on February 1.

The intention behind the DNC’s decision is to better represent the diversity of the United States. Historically, minority groups have had limited impact in the early stages of the presidential nomination process. By commencing the primary race in South Carolina, a state with a significant Black population, the DNC aims to address this imbalance.
